Measles outbreak declared on Merseyside

A measles outbreak has been declared on Merseyside. There are 13 confirmed and 16 suspected cases ranging in age from nine months to adults aged in their 20s. Update on Legionnaires’ Cluster Associated with a Hotel in Spain

10 February 2012, 1400hrs. The Health Protection Agency (HPA) has this week been alerted by the Spanish public health authorities about a further case of Legionnaires’ Disease in a UK resident who stayed at the Diamante Beach Hotel in Calpe, Costa Blanca, as well as two French cases. This brings the total number of UK residents associated with this cluster to 12, with three deaths.

Repeat Prescriptions

When you receive a prescription which the doctor has given on a regular basis, a repeat request will be attached. Please retain it and deliver or post it to the surgery allowing 48 working hours before collection. You can also send your repeat request to the surgery electronically. Please contact reception for details.

Whenever you order a repeat prescription only order those items you actually need. Wasted medication costs the NHS millions of pounds a year and it is everyone's responsibility to try to reduce the waste.

You can also fax your request on 01604 670827. We are unable to take requests for repeat prescriptions by telephone apart from in exceptional circumstances.

Dispensing

script We dispense medicines to patients living in a rural village more than one mile from a pharmacy. The law does not allow us to dispense for patients living in Moulton. Payment for medication can be made by cash or cheque only. We do not accept payment by debit or credit card.

Prescriptions Charges and Exemptions

Extensive exemption and remission arrangements protect those likely to have difficulty in paying charges (NHS prescription and dental charges, optical and hospital travel costs).

The NHS prescription charge is a flat-rate amount which successive Governments have thought it reasonable to charge for those who can afford to pay for their medicines. Prescription prepayment certificates (PPCs) offer real savings for people who need extensive medication.

NHS charges

From 1 April 2011, the charges are:

Prescription (per item): £7.40
12-month prepayment certificate (PPC): £104.00
3-month PPC: £29.10

If you will have to pay for four or more prescription items in three months, or more than 14 items in 12 months, you may find it cheaper to buy a PPC. The charge for a single prescription item is £7.40, whereas a three month PPC will cost you £29.10 and a 12 month PPC £104.00.
